Student Code of Conduct
Training Program at The Box Performance Space and Theatre

To maintain the integrity of our curriculum and ensure a fair experience for all participants, please keep the following guidelines in mind for future enrollments:

 

If a student misses more than 25% of a workshop or class series, they may be subject to removal from the class and will not receive a refund, and you will be expected to complete the class successfully before moving into the next level.  (extenuating circumstances permitted.) This includes arriving at class late, leaving early, not participating in the majority of exercises or stepping out for an extended period of time during the class timeframe even if attendance has been noted.

 

Attendance Threshold: Missing more than 25% of a session (typically two classes in an 8-week term + student showcase is applicable) makes it difficult to keep up with the progression of the group.

Instructor Impact: Frequent absences create significant extra work for our instructors, who must spend time catching students up on missed concepts, often at the expense of the rest of the class.

Waitlists and Availability: Our classes often have waitlists. Registering for a spot when you cannot commit to the full schedule prevents another student from participating.

 

Decorum Expectation During Class: When a boundary is expressed in a class setting, it becomes part of the shared framework for everyone. Learning to navigate that collaboratively is a core component of this training program. If you are unable to respect a boundary set by another student, it demonstrates you are unable to grow and stretch as a performer and collaborator, which is an essential part of this art form and training program. Inability to honor and respect boundaries and rules laid out both at the beginning of, and throughout the class session, will result in your removal from the class without refund. 

 

We want to ensure everyone has the best possible environment to learn and grow. We appreciate your cooperation in respecting these boundaries so that our instructors can focus on providing high-quality training for the entire community.

 

Showcase Dresscode: When building a show together for a student showcase, your instructor may require a uniform look for your class/team. Please do your best to honor the agreed upon dress code for your class’ showcase performance. 

 

Pass/Fail Policy: In a subjective art form it is difficult to grade a student’s progress and growth. However, we want to make sure that when students advance to the next level they are able to keep up with the instructor, skills training, and fellow students. If your instructor feels you aren't ready to move into the next level of classes, we reserve the right to prevent your registration to advance and require you to retake the current level before moving through the program further.  If this is the case, your instructor or the Director will notify you in writing the week after your final class session. 

 

Instructor Communication: We ask that you respect instructors' personal time by not contacting them via personal channels (social media direct messages, texting, calling, etc). If an instructor gives their phone number it is SOLELY to text that you are going to be late for class, and nothing more. Feedback should be sought during designated class time, or emailed to jeanette@theboxabq.com to pass along questions or concerns. If your teacher provides an email address where you can send questions related to class, please keep all questions on topic.

If and when students want to exchange contact information, that will be done between the students and not through the instructor’s access to contact information.

Outside Class Time: Instructors are asked to leave or close up or vacate the theatre spaces 5 minutes after class has ended. This means that all students must be out of the building at that time. If you need to discuss something with the instructor after class privately, it is their discretion how to handle that conversation (meet early the next week, talk in the lobby, or via email). Refer to the student portal for places to hangout and socialize with your classmates before or after class times.

Decorum When Attending Shows:

Tickets: When you are currently enrolled in the training program you can receive free tickets to any Box produced shows (The Show & Friday late night long form either from NightCap or The Show’s Encore). In the event that a show is SOLD OUT, you will need to give up your seat to a paying customer. You can always purchase a ticket to ensure admittance when planning to attend a show.

Suggestions/Volunteering: The magic of this art form is that it relies heavily on the audience members, lay people. When a student who “knows how the sausage is made” is giving a bunch of suggestions, the magic is lost and the experience isn’t as we intend it for the audience.   If you are an improviser/improv student, your job in the audience is to sit back, watch, and learn the craft from a different vantage point. For these reasons,  we ask that you refrain from calling out suggestions and volunteering to come on stage for any audience participation moments in the shows that you are attending for free. If this becomes an issue, you may be asked not to return as an audience member while you are enrolled in classes and utilizing free shows.

Hierarchical Relationships: We understand that relationships between students and instructors can become very close and potentially romantic between two like-minded, consenting adults. In order to minimize favoritism or biases (conscious or unconscious), we ask that you refrain from starting any romantic relationships that involve an instructor and student until those parties are not in a class relationship. Once the class is over, we only ask that you don’t register to take a class from said instructor as long as you are romantically involved with them. ​
